Kicking Aids Out Chimpombwa Tournament.
Friday, 21 August 2009
ca_2.jpgWe had the kicking aids out chimpombwa tournament bykalingalinga basic school. We had twelve teams of ten 11 boys and one girl’steams. Each team contributed two chimpombwa balls as there participation fee, however there are the same balls which were used during the games and the final.

Edusport through its peer leaders in kalingalinga organisedthe traditional event, the event was unique in a way that the boys and girlsdid not only play soccer but there was an education centre where edusport trainedpeer leaders used the event as an opportunity to teach life skills out ofsports skills such leadership, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS awareness and communicationskills.

Kelvin Chasauka one of the organisers said ‘the tournamentmeant to reflect on the pride of Zambia. Using a chimpombwa, makingthe teams to sing during the match, providing wooden goal posts, charcoalpowder as lime this was a clear indication that we can still go back to our olddays and be proud of ourselves as Zambians by using our own made equipments. Many times we cry of lack of modern equipment or funds to host successfulevents, organising an event doesn’t always have to be money oriented. If wewant to empower young one, skills should always come first.

A 12 year old David Musukwa also said he enjoyed thetournament in way that despite not winning but he made friends from some of theeducation games the peer leaders conducted during the tournament. And one ofEduSport volunteer from Norway‘Helge Helguson’ said he was impressed with the talent and discipline that wasdisplayed from the boys and girls throughout the tournament and I’m lookingforward to come back to Zambiaand be part of another event as this one.

Eventually, the winners (Marseille) walked away with atrophy, set of second hand jerseys, and medals. The prizes were courtesy of EduSportfoundation under friend of EduSport Norway.
